UK Flood Barriers was founded to help people to protect themselves from the misery that flooding brings to thousands of people across the UK every year.

The products that we evaluate and supply have been fitted to thousands of homes and businesses across the UK and USA securing millions of pounds worth of premises.

Our products are used by local authorities and private individuals to ensure that they can protect themselves from flooding, quickly and effectively.

Our team of flood evaluators are always on hand to visit peoples homes, or talk to communities about the flood risk facing them, and to give impartial advice on the types of products that would be best suited to their properties.

In 2007 The UK flood statistics show that five people died, 600 were injured, 3,500 people were rescued, 27,000 houses were flooded, 6,710 of these households by March of 2008 were still displaced, 5,000 businesses were flooded, 858 schools were damaged, and 42,000 hectares of agricultural land were flooded.

The fire brigade's rescue efforts were described as the biggest in peacetime Britain. These floods led to the biggest loss of critical infrastructure since World War II.

Ministerial estimates put the cost of the flood damage at £2.7 billion.

The insurance industry has concerns that this is not a one-off but a worsening trend. Claims in the UK for storm and flood damage in the five years up to 2003 were £6.2 billion, double the figure for the previous five years, and it is estimated that these costs could triple by 2050.

Between 1997 and 2005, some 120,000 dwellings were built in England in designated flood-risk areas, which represents some 9 per cent of all dwellings built over this period.

Flood Protection. So what can you do to protect yourself?

A warning about sandbags - There is a major problem with sandbags in a flood. Whilst they can be effective in holding back water, they will absorb large amounts of water known as 'black water' contaminated with dirt, animal waste and raw sewage. This 'soup' is potentially dangerous as it carries viral infection and bacterial disease into your property.

It is vital if you use sandbags to keep away from any seepage, particularly for pets and children, and to thoroughly disinfect the affected areas once flooding subsides. In our experience it is a lot better to use a flood barrier that is leak resistant and easily cleaned after use with a quick hosing.

Our research and practical application has shown that the products shown below can make a real difference in a flood situation.

Flood barriers - These fix to your doorframes, and are easily cleaned after use. Very easy to fit and available in a range of styles and sizes.

Non return water valves, known as Backflow valves. These stop the reverse flow of contaminated water and sewage back into your property. And although they require a retro fit, the peace of mind they offer is well worth it.

Flood proof airbricks - Designed to use a rising float to block the vents in the event of rising water. Highly effective
