Start preparing now, before flooding happens.

 

Check your insurance cover, confirm you are covered for flooding on both your buildings and contents insurance.
Find out whether you are covered for new for old and if there are any financial limits or high excess charges on repairs.

 

Know how to switch off your electricity, water and gas mains supplies. If you are unsure check with your suppliers.
Mark the relevant taps or switches to help you remember.

 

Prepare your flood survival kit and keep it in a safe place, ready for action.

• Copies of your home insurance documents
• A torch with spare batteries
• A wind up or battery powered radio
• Warm, waterproof clothing and blankets
• First Aid kit and any prescription medication
• Bottled water and non-perishable foods
• Baby food and baby care items
• List of important numbers.

 

Know who to contact and when.

 

Move valuable items to an upstairs room away from the possibility of flooding and think about moving electrical items and cars to safer places.

 

Organise a home flood risk assessment to see whether you would benefit from flood barriers, flood resistant airbricks and sewage backflow valves.
